Shock and awe. Downton fans were mortified to witness the Lady Sybil’s beloved character suddenly seizing and suffocating to death in the presence of her family and before millions of viewers during last night’s episode. One abrupt and devastating event has torn a family from their joy and delivered them into the folds of grief. As hard as it is to embrace the loss of a favorite character we will watch and hope that the entwined lives of the Granthams and their servants will continue to captivate us through their new-found trials and healing.
I am thankful this is not a Cinderella tale, but a portrayal of life in a day passed, with mortal man existing in the same proving ground as our forefathers and descendants, a dry and desolate place, paved with the grace of God to see us to our appointed end.
It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting,
for death is the destiny of everyone;
the living should take this to heart.
